Ethan must have apologized for having to take my blood and marrow about a dozen times before he finally let me leave the lab. The puncture marks from where his needled slid into my flesh and bone were already pretty much healed.

He’d been pale as he’s extracted the fluids from my body, and by the look on his face, you’d think he was the one having a sharp metal bit rammed into his spine. Poor guy.

It was just after sundown and we were following Azrael outside. I realized, a little belatedly, that I’d never asked where we were. I assumed some place south, but it didn’t seem to matter at the time.

Now, though, a crawling feeling of unease settled in my stomach. “Where are we?” I asked, posing the question to no one in particular as we ascended the front steps and followed Azrael through the garden opposite where we sat that morning, down a little flagstone pathway, and around the side of the house.

“Italy.” It was Blake who answered, one dark brow arched back in my direction as though to say, you really didn’t know?

My pulse picked up. “What?” I demanded, stopping on the path. “What the hell are we doing in fucking Italy?”

It had to be some sort of joke, right?

But the air between Blake and I was stagnant. He was not joking.

Azrael turned back from his spot at the head of the line and smirked. “I suppose I should have mentioned that.”

“You think?”

My mind raced to catch up. “How did we even get here?”

“We flew,” Frost offered. “On Azrael’s private jet.”

My brows were dangerously close to getting lost in my hairline.

Fuck. I must have been really out of it.

“Amala was here. I knew we needed the skill of a healer and she’s the only one I’ve ever convinced to work for me.”

Hmmm, I wonder why…

Azrael sniggered at me. “She keeps this place warded against being discovered by other vampires, or other witches. It’s the only place where no one can find us.”

I opened my mouth to protest, but Azrael hushed me and waved me forward. “Before you lose your very fragile temper, dear Rose, why don’t you come and see what I’ve got for you?”

What? With pursed lips and a sharp glare, I moved past Blake and Frost to stand by Azrael and looked to where he indicated at the edge of the path. Between the tall hedges and low bushes dotted with tiny pink flowers was something sleek and black, glinting in the moonlight.

I turned back to Az. “It’s yours,” he said, and gave me a little shove. “As promised.”

It took me a moment to realize what the hell he was talking about, then my spine stiffened, and I stared at him incredulously. “You didn’t.”

“Oh,” he said devilishly. “I did.”

Tearing my gaze from his smug face, I raced to the edge of the pathway and squealed. He actually fucking did.

He bought me a new truck.

A new fucking truck.

It was a newer model of my Betty. A bit larger, with all the bells and whistles I could never have afforded.
